3 exercises to help seniors avoid falls
January 19, 2011
The CDC estimates that one in three adults aged 65 and over fall each year. Seniors who are living alone and want to take precautions against falls may first want to invest in one of the several medical alert systems that allow them to instantly send a personal emergency response message if an incident occurs.
However, The Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune suggests that there are also specific exercise programs that can help prevent these events from occurring in the first place:
1. Tai Chi – This exercise is considered a non-impact sport that can produce calming effects and help improve mobility. The resulting movements can improve endurance, flexibility and coordination.
2. Arthritis Classes – Stiff or aching joints can be dangerous for those who are prone to falls. Fortunately, there are some classes specifically designed for older adults who suffer from arthritis. Joint mobility and muscle strength are the focus of these programs.
3. Walking – Walking can do wonders to enhance a senior’s overall health as well as leg strength. Those who may be wary of walking outdoors can find a gym with an indoor track, which can be a safer alternative.
