[0:00] Welcome to Caregiver SOS by Bay Alarm Medical. My name is Haley Burress. I’m a caregiving expert here to talk about the ugly side of caregiving that no one talks about — the most frustrating and challenging parts of caring for an aging family member, and how to get through it.

[0:15] Here’s a great question for us to talk about. “Ever since my dad turned 70, I feel like I don’t even know him anymore. He does need some help from me, but he’s relatively healthy. But he used to be this friendly, sweet man who loved to give advice and get to know others. Now he’s downright mean. He’s selfish and he has fallen down a rabbit hole of internet conspiracy theories. What can I do to get my dad back?”

[0:56] Family caregivers often observe personality and behavior changes in their aging loved one. This can be disorienting and can cause all sorts of mixed emotions. Sometimes a distant mother will become loving and that relationship changes for the better. Other times, like in our question, a loving dad becomes angry and falls into conspiracy theories.

[1:20] There are many reasons why this happens. Cognitive decline can cause personality changes, as can retirement and the loss of a role in life. Boredom and more time spent online can also shift personality and behavior for older adults.

[1:35] If you’re concerned about your dad’s personality change, first talk to his doctor about your observations and concerns. You can also mention it to your dad if he’s receptive — he may adjust his behavior when he sees that it’s negatively affecting you.

[1:50] You can also encourage him to get out and about with his friends more. You can help schedule transportation to these events if needed. You can also redirect him to habits that reduce his isolation and time online.
