Monitored In America

We’re a California-based, family-owned business serving fellow Americans since 1946 . We’re proud that all of our services are monitored exclusively in the United States.

America’s #1 Rated Medical Alert Provider

This system from Bay Alarm Medical is a great option for more active people who are out and about often. The main alert device, the SOS All-in-One 2, is about as big as a wireless earbud charging case, and can be used at home or on the go. It connects to AT&T’s cellular network (like a smartphone), has built-in GPS, is IP67 dust and waterproof and gets up to 72 hours of battery life on a single charge. It syncs with the Bay Alarm Medical app, and caregivers can check live location and location history.

The version linked above also comes with automatic fall detection and a wearable button, so you can activate the main device from a necklace or wristband.

Harry Rabinowitz - Tech Reporter

The Bay Alarm Medical In-Home Medical Alert ($19.95 per month) is a moderately priced, no-contract personal emergency response system that’s a breeze to install and use. It delivered quick response times in testing, and its two-way hands-free communication is excellent. We love the base unit’s extra-large help button, and the pendant help button’s solid in-home and outdoor range, though we found the reset button to be inconveniently located. That said, it’s the best medical alert system we’ve tested, and our Editors’ Choice.

John R. Delany - Contributing Editor

Home-based medical alerts are ideal for those who don’t leave the house often. They can’t be used on the go (like at the grocery store), since they have to stay connected to an in-home base unit. They work in the yard or even a few houses down, as long as you find one with good range — like this medical alert from Bay Alarm Medical.

Bay Alarm Medical’s in-home medical alert can be used either with a landline or cellular service. Choose between pendant or wristband help buttons, both waterproof with a reported range of 800 to 1,000 feet from the base station. It also comes with four help buttons to put on the wall.

This is a monitored system, which means the help button has 24/7 access to emergency operators who can dispatch local authorities and/or call loved ones if needed. All monitored systems require a monthly fee, and Bay Alarm’s price is very reasonable compared to other companies, with no additional startup fees. Users report quick response times and high-quality service from Bay Alarm’s operators. You can also add on fall detection — a feature that can automatically detect a fall and send an emergency alert on the wearer’s behalf.

While this medical alert doesn’t come with extra features, like medicine reminders or fitness tracking, its affordability, reliability and ease of use make it our top pick for an in-home alert.

Kim Wong-Shing | Senior Associate Editor, CNET

Bay Alarm Medical’s prices start at $27.95 per month. That’s lower than much of the competition, such as Medical Guardian, which starts at $31.95.

Bay Alarm Medical also offers many top-of-the-line features, even with its low starting price. And, if you need more than one system, the company has bundles that offer extra savings.

Taylor Shuman - Senior Tech Expert & Editor | Linda Schlenker - Occupational Therapist

Bay Alarm Medical’s month-to-month subscription makes it an excellent medical alert service for those who may need it only on a short-term basis. Customers are also happy with the monitoring service’s compassionate professionalism.

The medical alert systems are priced affordably, and it’s easy to add or subtract features and products as your needs change. It has a few minor hiccups when it comes to billing and returns, but most of them can be resolved by studying the fine print and communicating with customer service.

Overall, we think it’s an excellent choice for older adults who want both independence and security.

By Cathy Habas and Alina Bradford

Bay Alarm Medical is the perfect choice for anyone looking to get a simple and easy-to-use medical alert solution for themselves or their loved ones. We had a hard time trying to say anything negative about their in-home alert system.

Written by Jensen Wong

Bay Alarm Medical offers in-home and mobile medical alert systems. They also have a medical alert smartwatch. But what we like most about this brand is that its pricing is approachable. Combine that with their decades-long reputation for reliability, and you’ll get why they earned the highest rating from us.

Jenny Wisniewski - Medical Alert System Expert

What we like: Bay Alarm Medical sets itself apart through exceptional customer service. When our testers shopped the brand to get a feel for its sales tactics, we found the salesperson caring, funny, and very detailed in their responses. “I left the call really trusting him and believing he had my best interests in mind,” said a tester.

We also appreciate Bay Alarm Medical’s range of devices, including its SOS Home device, the SOS All-in-One 2 for use at home and on-the-go, the SOS Micro, a simplified wristband-style device, and its SOS Smartwatch.

Samantha Colaianni - NCOA Writer/Editor

Monitored in the USA for Maximum Reliability

A medical alert system is only as good as the 24/7 emergency call center that backs it up. Bay Alarm Medical works closely with our USA-based monitoring partner to create a network of highly reliable emergency response centers. Located in Ogden, Utah and Rexburg, Idaho, the two state-of-the-art centers are full duplicates of each other. If one station were to ever go offline, the other station would provide immediate emergency coverage.

Strategically Separated

Bay Alarm Medical provides consultation, technical support and customer service from our headquarters in California. We keep 24/7 medical monitoring completely separate from our day to day business operations to ensure that all emergency calls are rapidly responded to.

Certified & Rated #1 in America

Both 24/7 emergency medical monitoring centers are CSAA Five Diamond Certified and undergo a rigorous certification process annually, commit to tough quality standards, and agree to random inspections by UL, a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do your Medical Alert Systems Work?

You can expect help from us 24/7 every day of the year. In an emergency, just press your help button. This will initiate a call to our USA-based call center. A trained emergency operator will speak to you through the two-way speaker in your device, assess your situation, and make the appropriate calls to get you help. By default we have your nearest 911 services ready to call first, but you can change this so we contact family, friends, caregivers or neighbors to be contacted first.

How fast is the response to a medical alarm?

The process begins immediately. You'll hear the alert sound when you press the button and the device connects to the 24/7 emergency monitoring center. Our response times are among the fastest in the industry - typically in less than 45 seconds you'll be talking directly with the emergency-trained live agent, who will rapidly assess your condition. If you can't speak, the agent will take charge automatically and dispatch responders to your location. And if you're away from home with the SOS Micro or Smartwatch mobile system, your GPS location transmits automatically when you press the alarm, or if automatic fall detection is triggered.

Why can't I just use my cellphone to call for help?

Every second matters after a fall. Cellphones are usually tucked away in a pocket, purse, or require multiple steps just to make a phone call. Our medical alert systems have a simple push-button that will immediately connect you to our USA-based emergency monitoring center. In addition, our mobile and smartwatch systems can share your precise location with our emergency operators. If you rely on a cellphone while you are out, how will you get up to check the street you're on?

What's your refund policy?

You may cancel your Bay Alarm Medical subscription at any time and we will refund any unused months less shipping costs. Do I have to sign a long-term contract? Bay Alarm Medical does not require a long-term contract. Unlike some companies, we want to keep things simple. We will cancel your account once we receive all of the equipment in working/original condition without any cancellation fees.

Will this interfere with my pacemaker?

Our wearable in-home buttons do not interfere with pacemakers. Our mobile systems have tiny magnets due to an internal speaker for two-way communication. It is always advised to check with your Care Provider to ensure the best and safest results.

Are medical alert systems covered by Medicare?

Traditional Medicare (Part A and Part B) does not cover medical alert systems. However, some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans and private insurers do offer coverage. Some long-term care insurance plans also offer coverage. Read our blog post to learn more about medicare coverage.

Do you call family in an emergency?

Yes, we can call anyone you put in your emergency contact list - family, friends, neighbors, caregivers - and we contact them in the order of priority you choose. By default we always have your local 911 services ready at the top of the list, but you can make sure we call your contacts instead of, or before, dispatching emergency responders.

What is the battery life of your medical alert systems?

Our wearable buttons have a 5 year battery life and doesn't need to be charged. Our mobile devices can last anywhere between 1-6 days before needing a recharge.

How professional are the response center operators?

In an emergency, our operators know that they're dealing with someone who may be in shock or dazed, and they know both how to get the relevant information without wasting seconds, and also how to take responsive action if you're unable to respond. All this comes from training. All agents have to study and pass stringent tests to show their understanding of all the appropriate codes and standards. They learn how to deal calmly with emergencies, and to interact professionally with the nation's emergency networks, and they have to demonstrate their abilities in live practice. Our emergency monitoring centers are certified to CSAA Five Diamond level (the highest there is), and re-certified each year (as well as being subject to random inspections). An emergency response center needs to be button-down sharp, and that's our standard.

How reliable is the response center?

Reliablity is our number one priority when it comes to response monitoring. We have two response centers, one in Utah and another in Idaho, and each one is a mirror copy of the other. If something does go offline for some reason, we always have a backup available. We're able to offer 24/7 service across the United States including Hawaii and Alaska - and our response times are among the fastest in the industry. Our alarm system is compatible with most standard phone lines, both cable and VOIP, and we also support 170 languages (including Spanish, Chinese, Farsi, Vietnamese & Russian), because not everyone has English as a first language. And as we mentioned above, our operators are all professionally trained and certified to deal with emergency situations.

What if I can't speak?

Our monitoring agents will first attempt to speak with you and get a response. But in a medical emergency, you may be dazed or confused, and you may even be physically unable to talk - your alert device may be calling on your behalf, for example, if it's detected a fall. As soon as the operator determines that you can't speak, we reach out to your contacts or to 911 services (depending which preferences you've specified) to get help to you as fast as possible. Our SOS mobile devices, including the smartwatch, all have GPS built in, to determine your exact location - this is especially necessary in an emergency where you may not be sure of the name of the street you're on, for example. Our operators know immediately where you are as the call comes in. They can also access your medical records if necessary, which will save time with first responders - and can be crucial if you have special medical requirements.
