Many people dread the day when a young cashier innocently inquires, “do you qualify for our senior discount?” But relax! A senior discount doesn’t mean you’re “old.” It means you’re “old enough” to get a great deal on food, clothing, and more. The savings add up quickly when you claim these discounts and register for these loyalty programs.
Note: always check with the merchant before assuming you’ll get a discount. Many chains allow individual stores to opt out of promotions. You may have to show proof of age or your AARP membership card.

Eating out is fun, but can be expensive. Some chains offer special senior menus or discounts in all locations, while others allow franchisees to opt-in or out. However, most are anxious to please regular customers. They may not widely publicize senior discounts, but will offer them when asked. It never hurts to ask!

The great thing about most retailer senior discounts is that you can even get them on sale merchandise. Some retailers set aside a special “senior day” for discounts, while others offer them daily. You’ll usually have to make the purchase in person in order to verify your age.
Free Food with Restaurant Loyalty Programs
You’ll be happy to see your birthday roll around when you register with many of these programs. Most offer a free birthday meal – or at least a dessert treat. Many also offer a sign-up bonus that offers coupon savings or free food. Note that some programs require you to install an app, while others are email-based.
These rewards are open to everyone, but anyone watching their pennies or living on a fixed income certainly appreciates a free meal and other savings.

Senior Travel Discounts
With the exception of AARP, most of these discounts only apply to seniors 65+ and carry numerous restrictions. If you’re able to plan travel ahead of time, you can usually get a better fare. However, last-minute travel can be extremely expensive, so claim any savings you can!
