[0:00] Welcome to Caregiver SOS by Bay Alarm Medical. My name is Haley Burress. I’m a caregiving expert here to talk about the ugly side of caregiving that no one talks about — the most frustrating and challenging parts of caring for an aging family member, and how to get through it.

[0:15] Let’s talk about what society doesn’t always talk about regarding family caregiving. Here’s our question. “Why aren’t more people talking about caregiver depression? I feel like my friends who are also doing some type of family caregiving are all depressed, myself included. Why isn’t anyone saying this part out loud?”

[0:52] Family caregivers are at an increased risk for both depression and anxiety due to the mental and physical strain that caregiving causes. Even the most mentally healthy family caregivers can struggle with depression due to anticipatory grief and simply watching an aging parent decline.

[1:10] More people should talk about it. I know I do. You’re doing a great job talking about it with your friends — keep that up.

[1:20] Attending a caregiver support group can also be therapeutic, as you’ll sit with other caregivers to share stories and coping strategies.

[1:32] Also, talk about it with your primary care physician. They need to know how you’re feeling and about your caregiving role so they can best support your mental and physical health.
