Health clubs and gyms adapting to the needs of boomers

December 15, 2010

Many baby boomers are physically active and plan to remain so during their golden years. Both health clubs and gyms have started to adapt to this trend by offering specialized services and other perks, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Some chains, such as Nifty after Fifty, caters specifically toward older fitness enthusiasts, or programs such as SilverSneakers, which offers a program that is meant to help the health of baby boomers.

New workout devices are also being created that will be low-impact alternatives to activities such as running. Other gadgets have been developed to keep track of every health statistic that a gym-goer would need, from calorie intake to running pace.

The news source reports that there are around 10.5 million people over the age of 55 who are now members of gyms, which is four times as many as in 1990.

One of the most important exercises that older adults can perform may be strength and balance training, because these can help prevent future falls. Even so, it may be a good idea to have a medical alarm system installed in the a residence as an added precaution. This device can be used to send a medical alert to doctors in the case of an emergency.
