A fall is one of the most common causes of injury for senior citizens, but there some effective precautions that older adults can take when making a home and lifestyle age-friendly, according to The Mayo Clinic.
1. Staying Active – Exercise is crucial to fall prevention, because performing the right routines can improve balance, strength and coordination. Walking, swimming and Tai Chi are all low-impact activities that are suitable for seniors.
2. Keep Organized – If one has a home with a lot of clutter, it may be time to try and clean up. Obstacles on the floor can lead to injuries.
3. Make A Home Age-Friendly – Residences should also be modified so that they are safe during the golden years. Installing grab rails in the showers and on stairs is a good idea, as well as making sure that rooms are brightly lit.
4. Use Assistive Devices – A personal emergency response system can become an invaluable resource if a senior does fall, because this device can be used to send an instant medical alert to caregivers or doctors.
5. Wear Shoes That Fit – Some seniors may be accustomed to wearing shoes that are overly spacious, but this can lead to a loss of balance. Instead, one should find footwear that fits comfortably and snugly.
