Tips on caregiving from a distance

Seniors need to improve homes, visit doctors to avoid falls

Caregiving is no easy task, and it is even more difficult if the caregiver lives far away from their elderly loved one. According to The Associated Press, there are a couple tips that long-distance caregivers should keep in mind so they do not get overwhelmed by the role.

First of all, the caregiver needs to keep in contact with their loved one. Try and use video chats and other technology so the relative is able to see the senior and ensure that they are in good health. Also, find people around the elderly loved one, and have them pop in and see how the senior is doing, the media outlet reports.

Many caregivers who live far away may be concerned with the senior falling and injuring themselves. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one third of seniors over the age of 65 fall each year. Caregivers may want to purchase a medical alert so an elderly loved on can contact emergency services in the event of a fall.

Finally caregivers cannot forget to take care of themselves as well. Finding an emotional outlet and ensuring the person takes regular breaks is imperative in order to keep everything running smoothly.
